CNN and the AP have projected Rep. Chris Murphy (D)  as the winner over Republican Linda McMahon in the race for Senate in Connecticut. Murphy is a favorite among female voters, with Democrats targeting McMahon over women’s rights/health.

Former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO McMahon has pumped an enormous amount of money into her campaign, however, it appears that she has fallen short of her opponent. “McMahon spent $50 million of her personal fortune in her failed 2010 campaign against Richard Blumenthal, and she is believed to have spent about as much this time around. Campaign finance records filed in mid-October showed that the Republican had loaned $40 million to her campaign, bringing the total to $90 million”, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The race became so close that McMahon’s  campaign literature was placed on Democrats’ doors, urging them to vote for both President Obama and McMahon on the independent line, even though McMahon has endorsed Republican Mitt Romney for president.

The campaign literature displayed pictures of Obama and McMahon, reading: ‘‘President Barack Obama and Linda McMahon will fight for us. Vote Barack Obama for president and vote Linda McMahon for U.S. Senate on the Independent Line.’’

Apparently, McMahon thought she could hang on to the President’s shirttails to win, even though she has donated money to Romney.

On another note:

Virginia has suspended any reporting of its election results because voters still in line to cast their votes.
